I am a new owner of a 2000 Sea Pro 190DC. It has the concealed side mount control box for the 115hp Johnson. Everything is working ok except for the push button in the center of the lever that allows for throttle only operation. The lever operation is a little stiff as well. I am assuming corrosion is part of the reason. I am thinking about just replacing the whole unit to a newer version. Has anyone ever tried to replace a like control box that is concealed like this? I am learning there is no access to critical areas of the boat (for example the thru hull for the bilge pump hose connection is not accessible; nor is the port side transom for swim platform bolts). I hate to just start cutting access holes all over the boat. Am I missing something?

Can't say that I'm familiar with that particular configuration, but my guess would be that there are fasteners or snap tabs that hold the cover of the shifter on. When the cover is removed, the concealed shifter mounting bolts are likely visible. Once you find them, you'll probably also find that you can't access the nuts on the back of them so you'll need to drill them out and then use toggle bolts to secure the new shifter back to the gunwale.
Just a guess. Let us know what you find.

Since you're the new owner, you don't know if it has always been stiff or not. There are some tension screws in there that might reduce the stiffness and it is possible that the PO liked it stiff. As for the button, Once you take the cover off, you should be able to see how it works, and a little lubrication and repetition should loosen it up pretty easily. It's more likely stiff control cables, and they can be replaced fairly easily and you can keep your controls. Usually the steering cable goes about the same time, so unless the PO told you he replaced that, I'd consider changing that while I was in there. Welcome to the forum and enjoy your new boat!

I ended up purchasing a new concealed side mount control box just in case I need it. If not, I can always sell it on ebay. My problem is going to be gaining access to the original box. I can figure out how to remove the lever and find the mounting bolts that hold the concealed box in place. But, I have no way of reaching behind to the place where it is mounted to remove it and put in the new box. I have replaced them before in other boats in which I had access from underneath the side console. I am thinking I will have to cut an access cover below the control box to gain easy access. I just hate to do that, but can't see any other choice. Unless...maybe there is a way to pull the old box forward and out through the storage area under the steering console utilizing a line for retrieving the new box back to the mounting place?

I think I get it now. You think there are nuts on the back side holding the controls in, and you can't see any way to reach them. You are probably right. You might just drill out the heads to remove the old bolts and push them through. I think there is a marine grade toggle bolt you could use to install your new controls. I think someone on here knows where to get them.
