Does the side view work better the closer to the boat's center line the transducer is mounted or does it not make any difference? Does it have much drag and throw a rooster tail when mounted at the water line?
Got one on the way and the thing looks huge compared to the one it's replacing.

Yes, closer to centerline the better. Best mount would be right in front of the motor if you have a jack plate with enough setback. The sidescan will not work on plane so I mounted mine above the running waterline to keep that big dude from dragging all the time.

I want to be able to see the bottom when I'm running.

I got the system with the "Total Scan" transducer. I thought that would be better than having two separate transducers. In hindsight, that big total scan transducer is troublesome. To get it in the water on plane, it does shoot a rooster tail, and, I cant get it in the center of the boat. Therefore, mine works better to one side than the other. Also, the step in the transom prevented me getting the transducer to the right height. I had to build a bracket to set it back and up.

It's the Total Scan transducer and not the Structure Scan so I'm going to have the exact same issues.. I still want to see bottom while running so I guess there will have to be a rooster tail. Hopefully it won't look like a hydroplane.

See below. The mounting bracket that comes with the total scan transducer will not fit under the step. You will need some fabricating skills.

The step on mine looks to be higher so maybe I won't have to modify the mount but I will if I have to. Does yours show bottom while running?

The angle notches also didnt mate up well. I was either too low or too high on the angle of the transducer. Still trying to work that out.

I've got the two separate transducers so I'm in a little different situation than y'all two.

I got lucky and the mounting screws fit the old transducer's bracket holes. Got it mounted as high as it would go in those holes and it still might be a bit too low. I'll check it out in the water on Tuesday.

UPDATE: Tried out the new chartplotter and transducer yesterday... It's AWESOME! I was afraid there might be a huge rooster tail from the transducer due to it's size and because I thought it might be mounted a little too low on the transom but there was none at all it performed perfectly and read the depth at over 35 mph. I'm loving the touch screen chartplotter too but still have a learning curve to conquer.
