Hi all,
I am looking to purchase a 2004 Sea pro 238WA with an outboard Mercury Optimax 150. I am wondering if this size motor will be enough for a boat of this size? I intend on using it in the bay for now but I don't want to get stuck with something that lacks the power to go offshore if I eventually want to head that way.
Any help would be much appreciated,
Thanks.

With a recommended rating of 200/225 to 300 hp, I'd say it's under powered. A 150 Optimax will push it but it would be in a serious strain imo. I wouldn't want anything less than a 250 on any 25 ft boat.

Dry weight is 3200lbs, so I don't think a 150 would cut it either. I'd want 200 minimum, preferably 250.

I agree, 200 at the very minimum on that boat.

Thank you all for the replies, I was thinking the same thing. Although if I can purchase the boat for $35k AUD (as I am in Australia) which is roughly USD$25k with the 150 on it, which has done low hours. Is it worth it if I was to then pick up a 2nd hand 200/225 and replace it?
The same boat with a 300hp engine is for sale here for USD$54k.

I mean I don't know the Australian market at all but....54k for a 15 year old boat seems a little outrageous to me. How much is a new one over there?
I just did a quick search here and found a new 2018 239 with a suzuki 300 on it for 70k just for reference. Obviously you can't easily buy a new one as far as I know there so maybe that is what drives the price disparity?

There is a member here with a 150 on his 238 and he seems to be happy with it. I would prefer 250. I'd take it for a spin and see what you think.

This is good advice. emthup I think a 150 on any boat that size that's rated for a 200 minimum would be under a lot of stress and that alone can shorten it's life span but it will push a 238 and if you run it like a little old lady, it might last a long time. There is a huge disparity in prices / worth between the U.S. and Australia for some reason. A lot of Aussies are buying boats sight unseen and at inflated prices from U.S. owners. I'm assuming it's because some models aren't available for purchase in Australia or the prices are much higher there. I have a friend who sold his 23 Dusky to someone over there for way more than he paid for it. They talked over the phone but the buyer only saw pictures of the boat until it arrived in Australia. Someone once said: If you're buying a boat and if you can afford it, buy one that's rigged with the maximum rated horsepower... if not, buy at least the minimum horsepower. Makes sense to me since the boat manufacturers recommend minimum and max hp for a reason.

There are only a few Sea Pro's available here in Aus when doing a search and all are used. But for something similar in size with a 250hp outboard, brand new, no trailer is around US$94k here in Aus. Usually for something of that size priced at US$54k they are mostly late 80's, early 90's models with around 250hp. If you want to check out AUS prices compared to the US head to boatsales.com.au

I have a 150 4 stroke on my 230wa and it works well with me and 1 other person on board. About 37mph wot. She works a little bit more to get on plane with a full load but once up she's good to go.
Just compared the specs and it looks like the 238 is a little bigger and heavier than my 230. I'd give it a test ride if possible. If you don't carry a heavy load it might be fine.
