Hi, I need help with my Mercury quicksilver binnacle. Shifter itself is around 3 years old, I replaced all 3 cables last week. Problem is coming out of reverse in to neutral is extremely hard, almost to the point were I feel like a cable is gonna get ripped out of something !! 1998 sea pro 210 w/a

Yes. It is a little better, but going from reverse to neutral is a nightmare. I've adjusted the friction and detent screws also.

You sure it's the binnacle and not the cable or linkage?

All cables are working smoothly, i tried them connected, disconnected, adjusted shift cable and throttle cable then re checked my adjustments.

Also when its on the hose in my driveway its very smooth going through all gears, in the ocean is when it does this !!

Sorry, still tough going into neutral from reverse on the hose, but nothing compared to when its in the ocean !!

I'm wondering if the shift cutout switch is not adjusted/working correctly and does not cut the engine for that split second going from reverse to neutral? Now I'm thinking about disconnecting all cables and starting over again watching/adjusting/replacing the shift cutout switch ?

I cant find a wiring diagram for the interrupter switch, i keep hearing about a purple wire, i have 2 black wires coming from switch that are connected to a black and white wire, but in the harness were the black and white wires come from is a purple wire not connected to anything, i have pictures but I cant figure out how to add them to this post !!

I'm at a loss if you've adjusted the friction screws. The only thing I might try is disconnecting the cable from the motor and shifting it at the lever. If it doesn't happen there, then it's your binnacle. if it does, its in the foot.

Thanks, I've tried all that over and over again !! This is the 2nd outdrive (used & rebuilt) it did same thing on first outdrive also !! Binnacle is around 4 years old. Only other theory I can think of is cables are to long, binnacle is bad. But I've taken it apart, checked and re checked, greased it with proper grease, it works very smooth when no cables are attached to it !!

Since the binnacle shifts like it should with the cables disconnected and the linkage moves as it should with no cables connected, the problem has to be the cables imo. If the cables shift freely when connected to just the binnacle and not the linkage, I'd say you're right about the cables being too long and they're binding somewhere when connected to both the binnacle and the linkage.

I used the measurements from original cables when I purchased this boat, im going to measure myself. Another idea is maybe my idle is to hi, perf pro tec specs say 650 rpm, mine is running around 800 rpm with the engine warm and in the water ? Thanks for getting back to me !!

High idle can do that, but I would expect it would do it both to reverse and forward. I wonder if it could be just far enough out of adjustment, where you are going too far and actually going from reverse to forward temporarily until it knocks back out?

It does it going from F to neutral and R to neutral, but really hard going from R to neutral.....Sorry but I dont understand your question.
