Just wanted to give those of you with a 78-85 Johnson / Evinrude a heads up; I recently rebuilt the carbs on mine due to the fact that unless the engine the bypass solenoid was energized, it wouldn't stay running; Anyway, there was a few issues (this boat is new to me), and I rebuilt the fuel pump, replaced all the ignition wires, rebuilt the bypass solenoid, and of course, rebuilt the carbs. Now, when I disassembled the carbs, and removed all of the orifices, and they were clean, checked the floats, and they were adjusted correctly; I really couldn't see any obvious problems with the carbs. I did notice however that the needle itself (that allows fuel into the fuel bowl), did not always drop down when the bowl was empty, thus not allowing fuel into the carbs. When I rebuilt the carbs, replaced all the o-rings, replaced the floats, and that's where the good news comes in The carb rebuild kits came with new floats, needle seats, and needles, AND, a little "clip" that attaches to the needle and the float, so that when the fuel level drops, it (the float) pulls the needle down; it stops you from having to rely on gravity, and the mere 2.5 - 3.5 psi pressure that the fuel pump operates at to open the needle and re-fill the bowl with fuel. It really is a great improvement. Hope this gives everyone a heads up for when (if) they have to rebuild their carbs. Wayne
