I was having a great weekend on the water when all of the sudden my trim up switch quit working on the controls. I could trim down but not up. I could trim up or down on the Johnson, so I'm pretty sure its not a hydraulic issue. Any ideas where to start looking? Is there a separate fuse for up than down?

There is a separate wire that operates the "up" function.... sounds to me like you may have a bad connection somewhere on that wire...I don't remember the color but I think the generic wiring diagram shows the wire color.

Thanks Juan, So I'm looking for a blue wire connection issue. Hopefully I can find it pretty quick. I'm becoming quite the electrician having owned this puppy for over a year now!

I'd look for the blue wire that goes to the controls first... That color code worked for me when I was trying to find the up and down wires so I could install a trim switch on the bow, hopefully it will be right for yours too.

sounds to me like your up trim solenoid has gone bad. years ago a mechanic taught me that with trim solenoids think green for grass being down and think blue for blue sky being up. hope this helps

If it will trim up on the motor but not on the control box switch I'm saying its either a bad switch on the control box or a bad wire/connection going to the switch on the control box.

It sounds like one of the trim relays are bad. They are usually easy to spot. Black plastic, about one inch square, usually bolted to the side of the block. Switch them around, see if this reverses the problem. Less than ten bucks each in auto parts store.

Well, I checked the relays, and they are good, I swapped them and get the same thing. Just a wiggle of the wires and connections yeilded no good, so I'm afraid it's the switch itself. I blew my voltmeter last week, so I'll get a new one and test the switch before I search for a replacement.

Yep sounds like switch. You can easily test that by jumping power to the up or down wires at the switch.

A little late but if you didn't get this figured out yet check the wire itself. I have a Johnson and it did the same thing. Spent a whole day checking switches and relays and pump and finally found the wire was broke by the motor. The insulation was fine it drove me crazy because sometimes it would work when I did something then it would stop then start then I found it and replaced the wire. Good luck

I followed woody's advice, and jumped the wires at the switch. This way I could isolate the switch and rule out a short or bad wire as Wezel suggested. It was the switch, it has since been replaced, and life is good again.

Great, glad you found the culprit!

My trim/tilt on my motor (140hp Suzuki 2002) is doing the same thing. Where can I buy the trim solenoid? Where is the relay located? If anyone has any pics, that would help my simple mind. Thanks.

When you say doing the same thing, do you mean will trim at one trim switch and not another and only in one direction? If it is doing exactly as freezerfiller's was doing (working fine on the motor and only working one direction or not at all at the controls), don't waste time jumping out relays and solenoid's. They are fine or it wouldn't be working at the engine switch. Jump out the "bad" trim switch. If it works, your switch is bad, if still no then it's in the wiring/connection. Good luck.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. It was doing same thing on trim switch (on motor) and on controls. It would trim down but hit and miss trimming up. It would do this no matter if I was using the trim switch or the controls. Now, from time to time, it wouldnt trim up or down for a few minutes, then, all of a sudden, it would start working normal again..Ugh...

If both switches act the same then the problem might very well lay with your solenoids/relays or the connections to them. Jump them out and see if you can isolate the problem to the solenoid.

My solenoids/relays were bad (up and down). So, I replaced them both. All works fine now.
