If you have a ditch bag, what's in it and if not what would you put in one? I got a semi-large waterproof bag for a birthday present and I'm making a ditch bag out of it.. With all the recent drownings and capsized boats I'm thinking a ditch bag might be a good idea in the case I'm ever stranded on a desert island with Mary Ann and Ginger. So far I've got: Portable VHF radio Flare gun w/ flares whistle paper and a lighter Compass fishing line, hooks, sinkers and floats and gulp bait knife large plastic garbage bag and some towels Hat and sunglasses sun screen Vienna sausages and sardines (good until year 2020) A small inflatable life raft won't fit in the bag so I'm thinking about a pool float? Would love to have an EPIRB but can't see spending the coin for one. Suggestions?

I started with one, but it has eventually evolved into a non ditch bag. I probably need to revise it. Sardines are probably good till 2024!

I have my orange ammo box. Spare sunglasses, airhorn, pack of handheld flares, personal epirb, floating strobe, waterproof handheld VHF, bullfrog sunscreen, foil blanket , and a couple life bars. I do wear a belt style life vest most times these days. I also piss in a bucket when I am by myself. Ask anyone in the coastguard, most floaters have a unzipped fly. I got my epirb used on the cheap, sent it to manafacture in Miami for a fresh battery, they tested it out and updated the registry to me. All in under a $100 bucks.

The personal Epirbs are super cheap, well worth it in my book. I’ve got two in mine plus the vhf. Standard loadout is myself and my father, who would both hook one up immediately turn them both on if conditions separated us...

I have water and a mirror in the bag..just forgot to list them. Gonna put a first aid kit in there too. I guess I should take another look at PLBs.. last time I looked they were selling for around $300- $400.

I don't think I'd want a used one and I'm finding all sorts of prices.. Now I'm torn between a PLB and a EPIRB.. decisions, decisions.

I haven't tried it yet, but I found an App that is supposed to show your current location, track, speed, etc in real time so a family member can see where you (or your phone) are at any given time.. That's really all I want. I'm going to test it before I buy a PLB.

Got a link to the app ? I was using location service on my phone for registering my fish in a photo only tournament i am in , but it drained my phones battery to quick for all day trips. Picked up a solar charger for the phone on Amazon for 15 bucks. It keeps up the phones charge on the water. Just need to remember to turn off location service in settings when off the water. www.amazon.com/Solar-Charger-10-000-Black/dp/B075RL8BWT/ref=sr_1_24?ie=UTF8&qid=1532522805&sr=8-24&keywords=solar+charger+phoneI do use a belt style life vest. Won't do me any good if I hit my head, as I got to pull the rip cord and put it over my head. My wife gave me a vest style , but never wear it as it is obtrusive . Forget about the belt preserver is on unless it is bumping against the wheel when underway.

UPDATE on the ditch bag: Lesson learned the hard way... even if sardines have an expiration date of 4 years in the future, NEVER put them in your ditch bag. 021 They will explode and if you happened to have left your ditch bag open, you'll have a nice supply of bream bait. Maggots! YUCK!

Dear Gawd, sardines were part of your survival plan? I think I'd rather eat leeches or Gulp shrimp. I bet that ditch bag smells good now.

How far offshore you get cell service ? I went 50 off with a buddy this week since red tide suck here. lost service less then 5 miles off. Did ok but drop fishing really isn't my bag.
