Yeah, I guess I could've waxed it more than once a year and gotten there quicker, but I wasn't very motivated!

Well I took my boat out today to test for the spun prop. I noticed that the RPM's were up there above 6000 and only doing about 30mph. But the engine wasn't sounding like it was screaming. So I came back in and looked at the prop. Well the marks were still in the same place. What else could it be? Maybe a bad tach? Dog clutch?

From what i have read Max RPM is 5800-6000 with the rev limiter set at 6700 RPM. I know before i would get right around 5600-5700 at WOT and do about 38MPH. I am thinking of just buying a little temporary tach to verify it with my tach. I already ordered another 15x17 prop. But if the prop is good i will just send this one back. Yeah i was thinking the same thing about maybe the tach being bad. But from the last time i took the boat out. She revved up real high and i lost speed. sounding like a spun prop.

Well i bought the mini tach/hour meter today and brought it home to do some testing. Well a couple of things happened!!! I set everything up. I got the tach set up and made sure the settings were right for spark, turn on the water put the key in in the ignition. Wait for system check after system check done i turn the key and she turns over but doesn't start. No big deal i pump the primer ball and hit the key again and nothing. Not even a click!!!!! At this point i am thinking what the hell!!!! So i break out the multimeter and check voltage on battery.. all good there. I then check the fuse on the engine and that is good. So then i am thinking what the heck. I take cover off the binnacle and key switch and look for loose wiring and nothing. So i am still thinking what the Hell. Getting frustrated at this point. So i decide to get another battery and swap it out making sure connections are good and tight. Turn on radio to verify good. I hit the key and nothing. Starting to get a little PO'd at this point. Since i just hit the key and she turned over no problem. So i think to my self jump the solenoid and start it up. So i jump the solenoid just to spin the flywheel. She does a quick spin but does not start. OK, no biggie. I try the key again and she fires up!!!! So i let it run for a few minutes to check tach out and this is what it showed!
So after it ran for a few minutes i turned it off and tried to start it back up. And again nothing at the key!!!! So i jump solenoid and started it again. Ran for a few more minutes. I juiced it up a little more to verify tach again. And my tach on boat is off by about 1000-1200. So i discovered i have a bad tach, some loose or bad wiring in the ignition switch between key and engine and that my idle looks to be a little high. After all issues are fixed i will adjust it on the water!!!

Yeah reminds me of being on my big work boat. Something goes wrong and all my crew members come to me for answers and or solutions!!!! Except that big Ole Cat Diesel makes this look like a pebble!!!!!

I could be way off but that doesn't sound like 2200 rpm to me, I think your tech on the boat is correct.

Well then it is back to square one.... i think my Johnson is acting up on me because i was talking about replacing it with a Mercury just recently!!!!

Yup that's it I am sure!!! I think I am going to approach this one problem at a time. First I will disconnect the wiring harness from the ignition switch to the engine and test each wire to make sure I don't have a short in the harness anywhere. If so I will pull it out and replace it. I have been wanting to work on the wiring on the boat anyway. I will do some testing on the wiring harness on the motor end as well if possible to check for shorts or damaged wires. It has to be a short somewhere in order for it to work sometimes. Maybe it is the neutral safety switch in the control? I will try and test that as well. If not I have another binnacle in my garage that might work. Then I will see about getting another tach to see how the RPM's do compared to my existing tach. Replace if I have to. Once these are figured out I will put it in the water and check the idle RPM's and adjust if needed. Then last but not least try and figure what is going on with my rpm/speed problem. I got a new prop in today so I will put that on when I take it back out on the water. Any suggestions or tips on anything to check would be appreciated!

I think your tach is reading exactly double. It's probably set up for a 4 stroke (1 spark every 2 rpms). Check for a switch or maybe wiring instructions for a two stroke (1 spark per 1 rpm).

Run 12v straight to your solenoid to see if it's that or the switch or since you have a voltmeter you can just check for 12v. Also, it doesn't take much for that neutral switch to get you as you mentioned.

Yeah i set the mini tach at 1 spark per revolution. But i will double check it. Seems like a good little unit to have around. But damned if that thing doesn't power off after removed!

I am thinking a shorted wire somewhere or the neutral switch as i had mentioned. If only i could be so lucky!!!
