Thanks Ahhhh-Spray! Yeah i keep posting pictures. Just racking my brain on whether or not i want to pull the console off to fiberglass in some pvc board or just leave it on and work thru the holes on the console! So i will come up with a plan to get it done. Just running out of time before i have to head back out to sea for work. I did do some more polishing and waxing on the console this morning.












So as i was sitting there doing the Karate Kid and wax on...wax off. I remembered how my steering was very hard last year. Had to do the He-Man shuffle just to steer it damn near. So i disconnected the steering from my motor since i am replacing the engine anyway. And holy cow the steering was still hard as heck to turn from side to side even with no engine attached. So i came in and did some quick research for hydraulic steering and the best price. I have been wanting to put it on anyway and now was a perfect time to do it! Well i found it on Amazon for $579. But i noticed that West Marine had it in stock for $739. Well i called them up and they do Amazon price match now. Just started 2 months ago. So i head over there and sure enough they match the price. But then i had some West Marine Gold Member Rewards. So got it for under $500 today and i get more rewards points back in a couple of months. So it worked out good for me!!!!

This is what I Am envisioning. Of course I still have to run all the wires. But I got to thinking insteading fiberglassing it in. That I could use the existing screws on the front of the console for the backrest of the cushion and screw it into the PVC board. So I put it up temporarily to see what it looks like. . I will probably put some 4200 on back of board and screw it into place. I also took out the old steering cable. What a PIA!!!

If you were able to do all that without removing the console, I'd go that way.

Yeah I think I will leave it on. I will pull this piece back off and do 90% of the wiring and then put it back on with 4200 adhesive. Not as tuff as 5200 but that stuff is structural and the 4200 will come off.

Well I got a little bit more done before I called it a day. Hope to get a lot more done tomorrow. I finished cleaning up and waxing the front of the console.


The smaller screws were the existing screws that were being used for the cushion on the front of the console. I replaced them with the longer ones so I could get more bite in the pic board. I had a kit laying around that had these in them.

I opened up the Baystar Hydraulic steering kit so I could let the plastic hose unravel itself. Hoping to make it easier for the install. I will use this hard plastic hose for now, but I will get some rubber hose made up and install them over the summer. I have some connections at work and can get some made probably cheaper than what I can buy them from SeaStar. This person makes all of our hydraulic hoses for our work boats.




So I hung the hard plastic hose up from the upstairs rafters in my garage and let them hang there. I added a little weight to it to get them to stretch out. But now that I think about it. I should have put weight on them individually instead of together. I will fix that in the am.





And the last thing I did today was start to wire up the pvc board for under the console. Will work on it some more tomorrow.

I got most of the wiring done this morning. I ran out of red cable so I will have to pick up some more and a few other small items. I sure am glad the boss doesn’t know how much $$$ I am putting into the boat. But as she said “ I don’t care as long as it is ready to go fishing when I am!” I also did a few other things after I ran out of cable. Got the gauge cluster all sanded, primed and first coat of paint on. Disconnected all cables from old engine so I can hopefully get that off Monday while wife is at work. And I have more time to myself to get it done. I ordered a new radio to go in the dash and the new throttle and shift cables. Not sure if I want to replace the existing rocker switches or just paint them with Krylon plastic paint. I just did one and will see how it turns out. They all work so if need be I can just order new actuator covers.

Got some more work done today. I finished up wet sanding and polishing/waxing the console. The console was in real need of a good wet sanding and waxing. It looks a heck of a lot better now!







This was after I wet sanded it and then some pics of it after being waxed!






I then proceeded to install the wiring pvc board in the console. I used 3M 4200 as adhesive for the pvc board onto the interior console wall and then screwed in. I also used some pieces of wood and wedge it in there to put pressure on the board. Some photos are upside down!

After doing all that I then worked on the steering helm pump. It was a close call. Seems like they made an oversized hole at the factory for the steering. I just barely had enough room to get the mounting bolt holes drilled. Will probably add a piece of metal behind it for additional support.




I then put steering wheel on to see what it looked like. It sticks out a lot more now.


I then started to put the Gauge cluster back. I removed the hour meter and will install a temperature Gauge instead. The empty hole is where I will be putting a radio in. Also going to replace a few of the rocker switches and fuses. She came out pretty good after I sanded it all down and then used self etching primer and painted it.

Well the Johnson 130 is officially of the transom!!!!

I have been contemplating over the past week of how i was going to remove one engine and put on the other. Not that i knew it would be hard. But how was i going to do it with only 1 engine stand which the Tohatsu was currently on. So i started remembering how they pulled out my main engine on my work boat with chain falls and come-alongs. So then i had a plan of attack! First i pulled the boat out of my garage enough to give me access to the metal I Beam i have running in my garage from side to side. So first i would lift the Tohatsu off the stand with the chain fall and then use a come along tied to my beams holding the stairs in place for the upstairs. So i wrap a rope around the beam and come around the wall and strap a come along to that rope and then a rope to the leg of the outboard. i start to pull it in that direction and slowly let the engine down from the I Beam. Slow and easy till i have it far enough away from the boat so i have room to pull the Johnson off and on to the outboard stand.













Once i had the Tohatsu positioned where i wanted. I back the boat back into the garage some and unbolted the Johnson and went to town on it!










And these were my weapons of choice to remove the Johnson outboard. I didn't want to spend $50 for a ring to pull it off. So i used what i have used before. And it worked perfectly and safely!!

Once i had the engine off the transom i got a good look at it. And boy did it need a cleaning. It had plenty of 5200 and then it had spray paint where someone tried to paint the outboard while it was on the boat. So i went ahead and got 99% of the 5200 off and wet sanded it down and then buffed her up. Did i mention how much i hate bottom paint!!!!! That is the one thing i hate that this boat has!!! I also got rid of the pitot tube for the speedometer.










After that i proceeded to mount the Tohatsu. I will need bolts with more thread. I noticed the transom bracket on the Johnson is thicker than the Tohatsu. Hence thats why i need bolts with more thread. I will pick some up tomorrow as well as some sealant. What do you guys recommend i put on the transom bolts?

I also did a test fit of my batteries today. I will clean it some more and strap it all down tomorrow. I got a few brown boxes delivered today. So i have plenty to do tomorrow!!!

coming along nicely, I would use some 4200 on the mounting bolts and bracket. I hear you with the bottom paint, when I had mine all sanded of it pained me to repaint it but it's a necessity for me.
Funny I'd thought this should go to the other section the other day, but that would involve creating a whole new thread and I feel everyone is seeing all they need to right here.

I thought the same thing... captduck is posting a lot of good restoration info here. Maybe we should make a copy of the entire thread
